You’re probably asking - where have you been, I signed up months ago? Well, we made some changes to our original plan (based on user feedback) and are launching the online Cuts service as the first of three that will leverage our Cutlist platform.

First to launch is a fun service that allows you to easily create and share your new take of online video. It’s browser-based and enables you to grab your favorite video from top sites, add your take, and easily share it with your friends or family.

Ok cool, but what about the service I signed up for? We plan to launch our Full-Length video service later this year, and will keep you informed. Until then, we hope you enjoy our Online Video service and would appreciate you joining our beta program.

Jedenfalls hab ich die Einladung als einer der 100 Tester dann doch wahrgenommen. Nach der Anmeldung wird man von einem Video und diesem Bildschirm begrüßt:

Im Prinzip geht es einfach darum, Filme online zu editieren und zu publizieren - und dies so einfach wie möglich. Daher kann man z.B. einfach eine Video-URL von Youtube oder MySpace angeben und Cuts zieht sich den Film direkt von deren Server:

Da ich das Thema gerade heute Abend mit Siggi Becker im Chat hatte; wie sieht es eigentlich aus, wenn man auf diese Weise ein Video ‘modifiziert’, das keiner freien Lizenz unterliegt? Und wie wird sich dadurch der Markt entwickeln? Wird es zu Abmahnwellen führen? Werden sich die Betreiber solcher Dienste auf Ärger einstellen müssen?
Oder wird es gar dazu führen, dass freie Inhalte an Bedeutung gewinnen und sich die klassischen Verkaufsmodelle irgendwann nichtmehr lohnen?

Interessant finde ich auch das knallharte “beta evaluation agreement”:

[…] You will: (a) test the Service and cooperate with Cuts in evaluating the Service; (b) work with Cuts to identify and resolve any errors, problems or defects you discover; and (c) provide Cuts with feedback, comments, and suggestions for improvements (”Feedback”). Your rights to use the Service will terminate upon the launch of the commercial version of the Service.

2. Ownership. You acknowledge and agree that all Feedback you provide will be the sole and exclusive property of Cuts. You hereby assign to Cuts and agree to assign to Cuts all of your right, title, and interest in the Feedback, including all worldwide intellectual property rights therein. […]

Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass das absolut in die richtige Richtung geht. Irgendwann werden Kinofilme kollaborativ gefilmt und geschnitten. Freie Sounds wurden ja sogar schon in Hollywoodfilmen genutzt, also warum nict irgendwann mal ein kompett freier Film - von den Usern für die User. Und schenkt man der Idee der kollektiven Intelligenz glauben, so wird das sicher ein Knaller.

Bisher sind die Features noch sehr begrenzt, aber mit Flash sollte man viel realisieren können, sodass man bei entsprechenden Bandbreiten sicher irgendwann hübsch seine Urlaubs-DVD online scheiden und sofort veröffentlichen kann.
