VMware hat die Virtual Appliance Challenge abgeschlossen, ein Wettbewerb bei dem die Community virtuelle Maschinen konfigurieren und an VMware schicken konnte:

Jedenfalls kann man jetzt schon eine ganze Menge dieser Images bei VMware unter Virtual Appliances herunterladen. Interessant im Hinblick auf den Test neuer Software (Nagios, etc), da auch Unternehmen Trialversionen anbieten wie Astaro.

The first steps are performed on the host, within Workstation menus:

1. Power on the virtual machine.

2. After the guest operating system has started, prepare your virtual machine to install VMware Tools.

Choose VM > Install VMware Tools.

The remaining steps take place inside the virtual machine.

3. As root (su -), mount the VMware Tools virtual CD-ROM image, change to a working directory (for example, /tmp), uncompress the installer, then unmount the CD-ROM image.

Note: Some Linux distributions automatically mount CD-ROMs. If your distribution uses automounting, do not use the mount and umount commands below. You still must untar the VMware Tools installer to /tmp.

Some Linux distributions use different device names or organize the /dev directory differently. If your CD-ROM drive is not /dev/cdrom or if the mount point for a CD-ROM is not /mnt/cdrom, you must modify the following commands to reflect the conventions used by your distribution.

mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
cd /tmp

Note: If you have a previous installation, delete the previous vmware-distrib directory before installing. The default location of this directory is /tmp/vmware-tools-distrib.

4. Untar the VMware Tools tar file:

tar zxpf /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-5.0.0-.tar.gz
umount /dev/cdrom

Where is the build/revision number of the VMware Workstation release.

Note: If you attempt to install a tar installation over an rpm installation – or the reverse – the installer detects the previous installation and must convert the installer database format before continuing.

5. Run the VMware Tools tar installer:

cd vmware-tools-distrib
./vmware-install.pl

Respond to the configuration questions on the screen. Press Enter to accept the default value.

6. Log off of the root account. exit

7. Start X and your graphical environment.

8. In an X terminal, launch the VMware Tools background application.

Note: You may run VMware Tools as root or as a normal user. To shrink virtual disks, you must run VMware Tools as root (su -).

eWEEK Labs Picks the Top Products of 2005

Das große Online-Magazin eWEEK hat eine Liste der Top-Produkte von 2005 veröffentlicht. Neben WordPress, Solaris 10 und einigen anderen Produkten wurde eben auch VMware’s Workstation ausgezeichnet:

Der Hersteller VMware bestätigt eine Sicherheitslücke in seiner gleichnamigen Virtualisierungssoftware, über die es möglich ist, aus einem Gast-System auszubrechen und den Host unter seine Kontrolle zu bringen. Ursache des Problems ist ein Fehler im NAT-Dienst (vmnat.exe unter Windows beziehungsweise vmnet-natd unter Linux) im Zusammenhang mit ftp. So provozieren fehlerhafte ftp-Befehle eprt und port einen Buffer Overflow auf dem Wirt, über den sich Schadcode einschleusen und ausführen lässt.

Betroffen sind VMware Workstation 5.5, VMware GSX Server 3.2, VMware ACE 1.0.1 und VMware Player 1.0 sowie jeweils die vorherigen Releases der genannten Versionen. Der Hersteller hat bereits Updates zum Download bereitgestellt. Alternativ empfiehlt VMware, NAT einfach zu deaktivieren.

This vulnerability allows the escape from a VMware Virtual Machine into

VMware hat nun endlich die finale Version des VMware Players veröffentlicht. Dieses Tool kann vorgefertigte Images öffnen und stellt damit einen kompletten virtuellen Server bereit.

Herunterladen kann man sich den Player hier. Des weiteren hat VMware in Zusammenarbeit mit Novell, IBM, Oracle, MySQL, Spike und anderen Firmen vorgefertigte Images erstellt, die man sich ebenfalls kostenlos herunterladen und mit dem VMware Player öffnen kann. [Review]

Die Virtualisierungssoftware XEN wurde released:

Xen 3.0 ist das erste große Release, seit vor einem Jahr Version 2.0 das Licht der Welt erblickte. Die Zielgruppe dieser Ausgabe seien große Enterprise-Server in Rechenzentren. Noch hat VMware die Version 5.5 seines Workstation-Produktes zwar nicht angekündigt, auf der Website des Unternehmens steht diese Version aber schon jetzt zum Download bereit. Sie wartet mit voller 64-Bit-Unterstützung für Host- und Gast-Betriebssysteme auf, wobei in den virtuellen Maschinen nun auch mehrere Prozessoren zur Verfügung stehen, sofern diese im Rechner stecken.

Even if they didnt tell anybody about it, VMware placed the final version of VMware Workstation for download.

Maybe they will tell the world that they have finished v5.5 on Tuesday, 29th since the version number tells us, the release was made on nov., 29th.

VMware Workstation (ab v4.0) und der GSX Server (ab v2.5.1) haben ein kleines Problem mit dem Stromsparmodus der Centrino Mobile Technology.

Das Problem wurde folgendermaßen beschrieben:

I have a Windows host with power management features that vary the processor speed. When the host processor speed increases, the guest clock runs too fast. Can I correct this?

Zur Lösung des Problems schlägt VMware eine Editierung des config.ini vor.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Workstation\config.ini

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware GSX Server\config.ini

In der deutschen Version von Windows lauten die Pfade natürlich

…\Dokumente und Einstellungen\All Users\Anwendungsdaten\….

So, nun muss man einige Zeilen in dieser config.ini anfügen:

host.cpukHz = 1590000
host.noTSC = "TRUE"
ptsc.noTSC = "TRUE"

Der erste Eintrag legt die maximale CPU Taktfrequenz fest: z.B. 1700000 für einen Centrino mit 1,7 Ghz. Die nächsten Zeilen sorgen dafür, dass die Uhrzeit trotz verlangsamtem Time Stamp Counter (TSC) den richtigen Wert behält.

VMware hält auch noch ein PDF-Dokument zum Thema Timekeping in VMware Virtual Machines bereit.

VMware hat eine neue Version der VMware Workstation als v5.5 Release Candidate 2 zum testen für Lizenznehmer der Version 5 bereitgestellt.

Da ich diese Woche an einem Problem der Einbindung eines analogen Modems eines Gastsystems unter VMware 4.5.2 gearbeitet habe und mir die Liste der neuen Features von v5.5 Hoffnung auf Erfolg gemacht hat, habe ich die Betaversion von VMware auf dem Acer Aspire 1690 installiert.

* Experimental support for 2-way Virtual SMP
* New support for select host and guest operating systems and hardware – 32 and 64 bit
* Ability to open and convert Microsoft VMs or Symantec LiveState Recovery images
* Toolbar customization capabilities
* New wireless networking capabilities for Linux hosts
* Improved autodetect makes it easier to configure devices for virtual machines
* Enhancements to the command line interface

Von dem Funktionsumfang hat die neue Version schon ordentlich zugenommen, was man in den Releasenotes nachlesen kann. Allerdings ist die Version noch relativ buggy, sodass nach einem kleinen Test die VMware Workstation keine Gastsysteme mehr laden wollte. Eine empfohlene Reparatur der Installation brachte nichts, auch eine komplette Neuinstallation verlief immer im Sand.
Warten wir also lieber auf die Final.

Nach dieser Enttäuschung habe ich wieder auf Version 5.0 “downgegraded”, die sich problemlos installieren und wieder in Betrieb setzen ließ. Hier noch das offizielle Handbuch zu v5.5 und abschließend die Erklärung VMwares zu der Betaversion:
